What is 5-HTP?

5-HTP is a natural amino acid in the human body and is also the chemical precursor of serotonin.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps make chemicals that make us feel good. The human body produces serotonin through the following pathways: tryptophan → 5-HTP → serotonin.

5-HTP is found in very small amounts in food. Typically, manufacturers use the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia (an African plant) to produce 5-HTP nutritional supplements. Some people believe that taking 5-HTP can increase the amount of serotonin in the body, and that serotonin deficiency has been linked to a number of diseases, such as depression. For this reason, some doctors recommend taking 5-HTP with regular medications in some cases.
